Creating Strong Passwords for Your Hosting Account
Strong passwords are your first line of defence against unauthorised access. This guide covers best practices for creating and managing secure passwords across your Zeniar hosting account, Plesk, and websites.
What Makes a Strong Password?
A strong password should:
- Be at least 12 characters long
- Include a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters
- Contain numbers and special characters (e.g. !, @, #, $)
- Not use personal information like your name, birthday, or business name
- Not be a common word or phrase like "password123" or "welcome"
- Be unique to each account — never reuse the same password across multiple services
Where to Use Strong Passwords
You should use a strong, unique password for each of the following:
- Zeniar Portal account
- Plesk control panel
- WordPress or CMS admin dashboard
- Email accounts
- FTP accounts
- Database users
Tips for Managing Passwords
- Use a password manager — Tools like 1Password, Bitwarden, or LastPass securely store and generate strong passwords so you don't have to remember them all
- Use the Generate Password feature — When changing passwords in Plesk or the Zeniar Portal, use the built-in Generate Password option to create a random, secure password
- Change passwords regularly — We recommend updating your passwords every 3 months, especially for admin accounts
- Enable two-factor authentication — 2FA adds an extra layer of security on top of your password. This is mandatory for all Zeniar Portal accounts
- Never share passwords — Don't share your login details via email, chat, or text. If someone else needs access, create a separate user account with appropriate permissions
